ASWAN

It is a uniquely popular spot in Egypt for peace and relaxation due to its delightful warm sun , ideal dry climate and  scenic personality. Once the capital of Nubia ,Aswan is a very  popular winter resort . However, the wonders of the past have also left great monuments in its surroundings.

Main Sightseeing Attraction

- Kitchener Island

Reached only with a felucca , on an island situated in the middle of the Nile. Lord Kichener  on his Aswan island planted exotic trees and  flowers from the orient and Africa . It’s a very pleasant stroll a midst this unique Botanical  Garden.

- Mausoleum of Agha-Khan

A steep  climb will lead you to a superb view over the city of Aswan from the hell, on the top of which the Mausoleum is situated. The late Agh-Khan, who maintained a villa here, asked to be buried on the same island .

- Granite Quarries and an Unfinished Obelisk

A partially completed  obelisk   ( 27 Ft and 117 tons ) was abandoned by ancient stone cutters due to a crack. It makes visitors realize the incredible task , 5000 years ago , of cutting and transporting a piece of granite of such proportions from Aswan to Luxor via the Nile .

- The High Dam

A modern achievement of great magnitude in Egypt’s  history . Built by the Russians 1960 it supplies most of the country’s needed electric power . Moreover , the lake that has been formed behind the dam (lake Nasser ) is a huge water reservoir for times of drought as well as for commercial fishing .

- Nubian Museum

The idea of setting up the museum in Aswan has been the outcome of the International Campaign for Saving Nubia Monuments, supported  by Unisco. it houses 3000 rescued antiques representing different periods : Prehistoric , Pharoanic , Greco-Roman , Coptic and Islamic .

- The Tombs of the Nobles

The northern hills of the west bank abound in rock-hewn tombs of princes dating from the old Kingdom to the Roman period ;at night they are illuminated with spotlights and can be clearly seen from the east bank of the Nile. Inside, the are decorated with vivid murals depicting scenes of every day life, hieroglyphic biographies and inscriptions showing the noblemen journeys into Africa .
