RED SEA

SUEZ

Suez has been a commercial port since the 7th century. The spice trade and pilgrimages to Mecca made it prosperous throughout the Middle Ages. It became a naval base in the 15th century and, in 1869, the opening of the Suez Canal ensured its developments as a modern city. Today, Suez is one of Egypt’s largest ports.

El Ain El Sukhna

El Ain El Sukhna –the Arabic for (hot spring) was named after the nearby sulphur springs. Close enough to Cairo for a day-trip, this popular weekend resort has fine beaches, coves and coral reefs, it is also an ideal site for fishing and water sports. Recently, a commercial port, at the most advanced electronic procedures, has been inaugurated. It is located d40kms from Suez.   

RAS GHAREB

Ras Ghareb is situated in the north of Hurghada. It is one of the most famous cities in the Red Sea and one of the most important centers of extracting oil.

EL GOUNA

Located 25km north of Hurghada. It a tourist resort recently developed to offer ultra-modern facilities. It consists of several tourist resorts, international hotels of different categories, diving centers and a golf course. It has a small airport for handling private planes.

HURGHADA (The Capital)

It lays 395km south of Suez, and is noted for its magnificent summer and winter climate. The clarity of its water made it a center of tourist attraction especially for divers and practicing water sports because of the worldwide fame of its coral reefs and rare marine life it enjoys. Visitors can watch the exquisite under water marine life through well-equipped glass bottom submarines. Hurghada has a large number of hotels and tourist resorts of different categories as well as well-equipped diving centers offering facilities for aquatic sports, in addition to restaurants and bazaars.

There is also the Aquarium, which houses the most wonderful marine species especially the mermaid. National and international fishing contests are held in Hurghada. It is connected with Luxor by paved road across Safaga / Qena / Luxor. Daily sightseeing tours to Luxor can be arranged.        A cruise service connects Hurghada with Sharm Al Sheikh, the cruise takes 90 minutes by ferry.

MARSA ALAM

135km south of Al-Qusseir. It is a suitable place for fishing and diving, connected to Edfu by desert road 280km long. Due to its proximity to Luxor and the shrine of Abu Al-Hassan Al-Shazli, it’s considered a big tourist center, which avails the tourist of the chance of visiting the important monumental sites and at the same time of enjoying the pleasures of the Red Sea and its exotic beaches.

 

 


SAFAGA

65km south of Hurghada. It is a marine port connected by    a regular cruise shuttle service line with Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Safaga city is considered one of the most important therapeutic tourist centers as special medical researches have proved the potential of attracting international tourism to Safaga. The resort is reputable for its unpolluted atmosphere, black sand dunes and mineral springs, which have acquired specific characteristics for remedy of Romatoid and psoriasis.

AL-QUSSEIR

80km south of Safaga, connected to Qena City by a road 220km long. Al-Qusseir has a long history as one of the major ports of the Red Sea: from here Queen Hatshepsut launched her expedition to the land of Punt. The 16th-century fortress of Sultan Selim, still standing in the center of town, shows         Al-Qusseir’s formers strategic importance. Today is a quiet resort with sandy beaches, clear waters and coral reefs.  It is also a suitable site for camping and water sports. An ancient caravan trail to Qift in the Nile valley, leads from Al-Qusseir through the mountains, passing several and Pharaonic and Roman sites. A new road, directly to Luxor, has been opened.

BERENICE

A small town 12km south of Marsa Alam, rich in fish and is an excellent therapeutic center. Offshore, visit the tectonic island of Zabargad, a geological phenomenon that is also famous as the source of the semi-precious gem olivine, mined here from 1500B.C until the mid-20 century. From peridot hill, there are breathtaking views of the surrounding blue lagoons, rich in marine life and home to many dolphins.

Archaeological Sites

The Red Sea region abounds in monuments of the various historical eras.

1-Pharaonic and Roman antiquities

There is a collection of Pharaonic inscriptions in Um Al-Fawageer in Wadi El-Hammamat 235km south Hurghada, in addition to Roman ruins (71km south of Hurghada), and the remains of Roman temples in Gabal El-Dokhan (65km north of Hurghada).

2-Christian Monuments

St. Antonius’s Monastery: on Za’farana / Koreimat Road, 50km north of Za’farana. It lies at the footill of the mountain below a high hillock over look in the sea. This monastery is considered one of the largest and oldest Christian monasteries as its construction dates from the 40th century.

St.Paula’s Monastery: on the Ra’as Ghareb / Za’farana Road. Its constructions dates from the end of the 14th century

3-Islamic Monuments

One of the most important Islamic monuments in the east desert is the shrine of Sheikh Abuel Hassan Al-Shazli, 150km from Marsa Alam City. It dates back to 656 Higri.
