The Governorate of Assyut is about 373 km. south of Cairo . On both banks of the Nile, tombs of ancient local governors (Nome-Rulers ) are spread . the walls of these are decorated with magnificent drawings and paintings as well as important historical text  

Assyut's  Monuments

- Khety  & Zafa tombs

There are the tombs of the local governors    (Nome-Rulers) , who contributed a great deal to establishment of the middle kingdom.

- Rifa Monastery

south of Assyut . the most prominent feature is the tombs hewn in hillside rocks , dating back to the Middle and new Kingdom.

 


- The Meer  Area

North of the Governorate , 18 kms. From El Qusseyah city , was under the rulers of the 14th . Nome , Upper Egypt , in both the Old and Middle kingdoms.

- El Gabarawi Monastery Area 

On the edge of the eastern desert near the city of  Manfaloot. Over 100 tombs are scattered all over the area , most important of which are: Aba and Gaw from the period of pepi I.

- The Monestry of Al Muharraq

nestles against the western foothills of the Mountain . It was built around the area where the Holy Family remained just over six mounths . Their time was spent mainly in a cave which became , in the Coptic era , the alter of the Church of Virgin Mary , built at the western end of Monastery compound . The altarstone was the resting place of the Child Jesus during the months . ?He dwelt there.
