SUHAG

The Governorate  of Suhag lies 470 km.south of Cairo . It comprises a large collection of the important monuments .

Main Sightseeing Attraction

- Abydos

is considered one of the most famous historical sites in Egypt , for it was the main center for the worship of God Osiris . It is located on the west bank of the Nile , about 12 kms. South east of El Balyana . Abydos became famous when in 1895 , a collection of tombs were discovered , and identified as those of Kings of the I and II Dynasties . However , the most important of Abydos monuments still remaining date back to the New Kingdom .

- The Temple of Seti I

On the edge of the desert, and was built in honour of God Amon . It was also used as a funeral temple for Seti’s son, Ramses II . the Temple is unique in its architectural design , having the shape of letter L , rather than the traditional rectangular shape of the Egyptian temples . It is characterized by its minute details and expressive depiction . On its walls are recorded the names of all Pharaohs who ruled Egypt since "Mena".

- Akhmeem 

Akmeem town is one of the oldest Egyptian cities . It was the headquarters of worshipping “ Min “ god of reproduction and fertility for the ancient Egyptians . Recently discovered was a limestone  statue , snow-white , for the crowned queen “ Merti Amon ‘ , daughter  of Ramses II . The statue’s features are undamaged , 11 meters high , and is considered one of the most beautiful statues ever discovered up till now, particulary as its features are very clear.

 

 


- The temple of Ramses II

On the walls of this temple we find drawings representing some historical events . There are also scenes of the coronation of Ramses II as joint ruler of the kingdom with his father North of the temple are ruins of certain houses and buildings dating back to archaic times and the Old Kingdom.

- The Monestry of Al Muharraq

nestles against the western foothills of the Mountain . It was built around the area where the Holy Family remained just over six mounths . Their time was spent mainly in a cave which became , in the Coptic era , the alter of the Church of Virgin Mary , built at the western end of Monastery compound . The altarstone was the resting place of the Child Jesus during the months . ?He dwelt there.

Christian Monuments

Suhag is also rich in churches and monasteries dating back to the early days of Christianity. the most important of which are

- White Monastery

Deir Amba Shenuda (Monastery of St. Shenute) known as Deir Al – abyad (white Monastery), housing a 5th C . Church.    

- Monestry of Anba Bishoy

Deir Amba Bishoy (Monastery of St. Bishoi) or Deir Al – Ahmar to the north West of Deir Al Abyad , housing its ancient church.

- Red Monastery

Alternatively called the "Red Monastery", north-west of the Anba Shinouda Monastery , and embraces a very ancient church
